Current Residents

Southeast Texas Bear Refuge is the home to two permanent resident black bears. Ami and Ernie arrived at the STBR in April of 2011 as young cubs after an early retirement from the entertainment industry. Although they have been raised together, they are in fact not related. At about 8 weeks old, the two cubs were paired up after being pulled from their mothers and used as photography props for a production company. After only a few days of work, the cubs completed the project and were then considered retired. To ensure the bears would stay together and that they would have a safe and secure future, their owner "re-homed" the bears to the STBR. Although Ami and Ernie will never experience true freedom, they will have the next best thing... They will live their life as wild bears with room service.
